Steve Dean Competition Entry

Well my Grenadier Giant was finally knocked out of the Steve Dean forum competition, losing to some beautifully painted 2000AD figures, so no shame there. To be honest once I'd finished painting the figure I wasn't all that pleased with it, but I entered it anyway. Very pleased it stayed in as long as it did considering the calibre of brushwork of the other entries. It was knocked out of the main contest by the Imperial Steam Tank but then got to the semi finals of the 'I was Robbed Mate' contest. I've really enjoyed taking part and I'm now looking for a miniature to enter in the next competition. Better luck next time.

Kind of WIP

This is probably more like work that's ground to a halt than progress. I've had this ECW army, or that should be armies has I've got both sides, since 1985. Had it bought me for my 15th birthday. Got it out to have a look. This is just a small portion, all Minifigs.

I should really start painting, 26 years is a long time to wait to have some paint slapped on you.

So what have I got on the bench at the moment:-

I'm still persevering with Napoleonic (very Very slowly). Picked up the drummer boy of the 44th, and did a bit on him today. But still have two more to do to complete the command stand.

 Something seasonal; Space Santa
105th Rifleorcs for my Flintloque collection.
7th Cavalry dude waiting for flag.

I was admiring the Samurai on and I felt inspired to paint one. So I dug into my lead collection and found this Citadel pre-slotta figure. I even had a go at NMM again, not too sure about the result, but I'll keep trying.

Raven Blood Eye

I’ve just finished reading Raven Blood Eye by Giles Kristian. If your into the Saga game by Gripping Beast then it’s a must read. I’ve yet to buy the rules but I’ve read the reviews and have got the idea behind them. The book could have been written for the rules, similar to how all the warhammer books are written to accompany the rules of the same name.
It tells the story of a young man called Osric, who has a permanent bloodshot eye from a head injury, hence the title. Captured by Norsemen (the author rarely uses the term Viking in the book believing the word brings pre conceived ideas) he quickly becomes indoctrinated into their fellowship and embarks on a bloody quest across Britain, battling war bands from Wessex, Mercia and the Welsh.
One of the things that I really enjoyed in the book is the portrayal of the two religions. The clash of paganism and Christianity runs through out the story. The pagans see the Christ worshippers as weaklings and the Christians see them as blood thirsty heathens. By the end of the story you get a better understanding of the religious driving force behind the Viking raids across the sea and their fearless confrontation of death on the battle field.
All in all, its an excellent read and I highly recommend it, there’s also a follow on book called Sons of Thunder. Right I’m off to buy a copy of the Saga rules now.

Space Wolf

I painted this guy for my son, for his birthday. He wanted it exactly like it was in White Dwarf, so I tried my best to get it at close as I could. He was very pleased with it, so I was happy.

I painted some Romans earlier this year; they’re the first and only Romans I’ve ever painted. Still got a musician and a standard bearer left so I might get them out and slap some paint on them too. I especially enjoyed doing the lion cloak on the aquilifer. I painted the Centurions’ eyes several times but there was a bit of metal in the right eye socket that I just couldn’t get rid of. In the end I just did my best, but I admit he does look a bit bog eyed. I’m sure there must have been cross eyed people back then, I mean they didn’t have corrective eye surgery did they, this one just happens to of made it to Centurion.
